Brian J. Masterson

Board Member

Dr. Brian Masterson is a physician with over 30 years of clinical experience. His major interests include: integration of medicine and psychiatry, issues of transplantation of solid organs, existential management of chronic life-threatening diseases, biopsychosocial treatment of trauma-related incidents, immunologic response to stress, psychopharmacogenomics, advanced augmented intelligence for process improvement, and human factors design process. 


Dr. Masterson serves as a Senior Behavioral Health Medical Director for United Health Group / Optum, overseeing the behavioral aspects of Medicaid programs for the states of Missouri, Michigan, and Wisconsin. 


From 2014 to 2016 he was the Associate Medical Director of Inova Behavioral Health Services and Medical Director for Behavioral Neurology at the Inova Neurosciences and Spine Institute. During his tenure, he led the largest psychiatric practice in Northern Virginia with a diverse payer portfolio of self-pay, private, and public insurance. 


Dr. Masterson concluded 35 years of military service as the Chair of the Health Futures Group, Chief of Interagency Collaboration, and Medical Chair for Global Health at the National Defense University under the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. He drove efforts to anticipate a global health crisis that prepared the DOD to respond to the Ebola outbreak in western Africa in 2014. 


Notable endeavors include the development of a wellness platform that decreased the suicide rate within the Air Force Reserve Command and the Air Education & Training Command. He has held multiple senior leadership positions: Hospital Commander and Director of Base Medical Support for the Joint Air Base Balad / Logistical Support Area Anaconda, Balad Iraq, Commander of the USAF Surgeon General Staff, and the Surgeon General for the USAF Reserve Command. 


Dr. Masterson received his Bachelor of Science from the United States Air Force Academy and his Doctorate of Medicine as an Aesculapian graduate from Harvard Medical School. He obtained a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Texas and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the National Defense University.
